Tesla's Austin Robotaxi now runs until midnight, six hours short of Waymo's 24/7 service

Tesla's Robotaxi app began notifying Austin riders on the night of Oct 16 that rides are "now available until midnight," putting service hours at 6am to midnight. The hours match the window the service launched with on June 22, 2025, after a 10pm close on Aug 26 and an 11pm close on Oct 2.

Tesla's Robotaxi app began telling Austin riders on the night of Friday, Oct 16 that rides are "now available until midnight," with the first rider screenshots posted on X from 10:18pm CT, according to Supercharged Daily. The notice reads: "Night out? Cybercab has your back. Rides now available until midnight."

That is the 6am-to-midnight window the robotaxi service launched with on June 22, 2025, after a 10pm close on Aug 26 and an 11pm close on Oct 2. The change came only as an in-app notice: as of Saturday afternoon, neither the @robotaxi account nor Elon Musk had posted about it. Midnight still leaves six hours a day when Austin riders cannot hail a Tesla, and Uber says Waymo trips in Austin run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tesla's count on the Texas DMV's automated-vehicle registry climbed from 769 to 803 late on Oct 16, and all 34 additions were 2026 Model Ys, with Cybercabs flat at 349, per Robotaxi Tracker figures cited by Supercharged Daily. Over the last 30 days Tesla added 364 Texas registrations to Waymo's 197. Waymo still has more on the registry, 1,185 to 803, and a registration is not necessarily a car in service: Robotaxi Tracker has matched 444 of Tesla's 803 VINs to vehicles in its community-reported fleet directory. Tesla VP of AI Ashok Elluswamy has tied round-the-clock Robotaxi service to FSD v15, with a fleet-wide rollout targeted for October.

Waymo enters Canada with Toronto mapping, targets first riders in 2028

Waymo said on Oct 16 that its vehicles will begin driving Toronto streets manually in the coming days as it maps local roads, and it aims to carry its first riders there in 2028. Ontario's automated-vehicle pilot program covers manual driving and mapping, and Uber says paid driverless rides would need additional approvals and will not come before 2028 at the earliest.
