Altman confirms OpenAI will build a humanoid, with a demo penciled in for 2027
Sam Altman said OpenAI will build its own humanoid robot and told Fortune he expects a demo in 2027. OpenAI's careers page lists 27 robotics roles covering actuators, thermal systems and supply chain, for a robot that has no published design or partner.
Asked on the Sources podcast whether OpenAI would build a humanoid, Sam Altman gave a two-word answer: "We will." In a separate Fortune interview he put a date on the first public look — "I think we'll have a cool demo in 2027" — and added that robots walking the streets are "a few years longer" away.
The revealing part is where OpenAI says the difficulty sits. Altman called the robot's appearance "less important than really figuring out … the brain that makes the robot work." The hiring says something else as well. Engadget counted 27 open robotics roles, spanning motion control, state estimation, whole-robot behaviour and machine-learning infrastructure for physical AI, and also custom electromechanical actuators — motors, transmissions, sensing and thermal systems — plus manufacturing and supply-chain positions.
A demo date is not a product plan
Actuators can be difficult to source at scale; the job listings show OpenAI is hiring for hardware work alongside software and modeling. OpenAI's public statements describe a prototype demonstration, not a launch: the 2027 date covers a "cool demo," and real-world use is pushed further out without a date attached. OpenAI also invests in 1X, whose NEO is aimed at the home, and it backed Figure AI before that collaboration ended in February 2025, when Figure decided to build its own robot intelligence. Building hardware puts OpenAI into the same lane as the companies that once ran its models.
Integrating with someone else's chassis was the alternative
A general-purpose robotics model can be sold onto other people's machines, which is the path Google DeepMind's Gemini Robotics and the robot-model APIs have taken. Owning the actuators forecloses that option and commits OpenAI to supply chain, service and safety work that has little to do with model quality. Tesla's Optimus took roughly five years from announcement to producing units, and missed its target of about 10,000 in 2025, which is the timeline the 27 job listings are walking into.
The checkpoint is the 2027 demo, and specifically what it shows: a robot OpenAI assembled, or one of its models steering hardware someone else built.
