Aptiv will host hundreds of TARS and Shanghai Electric robots in its plants and sell both makers its robot compute
Aptiv signed agreements at the CIIE in Shanghai to bring hundreds of embodied robots from TARS and Shanghai Electric into its production lines, with Aptiv's computing platform and power management going into both partners' robots first. The car-parts supplier is buying robot trials and selling robot parts in the same deal.
Aptiv, the New York-listed auto supplier, signed separate strategic agreements on Nov. 6 with Shanghai robot maker TARS and equipment group Shanghai Electric at the China International Import Expo. Under them, hundreds of embodied AI robots from the two companies will move onto Aptiv's production lines for technical validation, Xinhua Finance reported. The traffic runs the other way too: Aptiv's high-performance computing platform and power management will go into both partners' robots first, with mass production planned for this year.
That second clause is what makes the deal different from a factory buying robots. Aptiv is hosting the trials and supplying the parts. Its robot offering covers sensing, an edge computing platform, software, power modules and flexible wiring, and its sensing system pairs surround-view cameras with short-range radar for 360-degree coverage, according to Xinhua. That makes Aptiv's lines a proving ground for Aptiv hardware as well as for the robots, and the line data feeds back into Aptiv's product development and the partners' models. "Cars and embodied robots serve different scenarios, but they share the same technology roots, the same foundations and the same supply chain," said Yang Xiaoming, Aptiv's president for China and Asia Pacific.
TARS is the partner with a date attached
TARS gave the most detail. Aptiv will finish deploying TARS A-series industrial robots at the scale of a hundred units by the end of 2026, across 8 production processes and 33 scenarios including flexible assembly, inspection and production management, Sina Tech reported on Nov. 7. The first batch is already running on Aptiv's lines. At the expo, an A3 robot driven by AWE, TARS's robot foundation model, ran a connector-assembly loop on its own: picking material, plugging connectors and feeding parts.

The numbers have moved slowly. In July, two A-series robots, each 1.8 meters tall and over 90 kg on a wheeled base with a 7-axis arm, were working at Aptiv's plant in Shanghai's Jiading district, and Aptiv planned to bring in about 100 dual-arm robots this year, Shangguan News reported. A June 26 agreement between TARS and the Jiading government set a target of a cluster of 1,000 or more. Four months on, the year-end figure is still about 100. TARS says it was the first to deploy and coordinate 100 robots on a flexible assembly line, and that AWE was trained on more than 1 million hours of real-world data.
The case against reading this as scale
"Validation and solution optimization" is how Xinhua described the job of the hundreds of robots, and Aptiv has not said how many will count as production workers. Other auto suppliers are taking a different route into robots: Qiyuan Robotics moved its assembly onto Huguang's processes, so Huguang is selling its manufacturing know-how. If the 1,000-robot cluster stalls at a hundred, Aptiv will still have shipped compute and power modules into two robot makers' products. That would make it a successful supplier deal and a small deployment.

Kajima has started full-scale use of robots running FieldAI's physical AI autonomy on construction sites, after more than 2,000 autonomous rounds and over 10 sites in about a year. Korea's industry ministry says the government will be the "first buyer" of AI robots, spending ₩340 billion on about 1,700 of them in 2027. Most go to patrol, safety and farm work, and the rules being written around the purchase are about who gets to sell.
