Boston Dynamics gives Atlas a four-finger hand built for mass production
Atlas's new hand has 13 degrees of freedom, no pinkie and direct-drive joints designed for sim-to-real training, as Hyundai starts training Atlas in Georgia and Rohit Prasad becomes CEO.
In short: On Oct 1 Boston Dynamics unveiled a new Atlas hand: four fingers, 13 degrees of freedom (up from 7), directly actuated with a single actuator type, and designed to be manufactured at scale.
The hand
- No pinkie. The design trades human likeness for tool use, ruggedness and low repair cost: triggered tools such as drills, torque drivers, grinders, nail guns and welding torches; pinch and tripod grasps.
- Actuators sit in the joints, fully encapsulated, with no fragile cables crossing joints; each actuator pack is a swappable unit.
- Built for high-fidelity simulation so grasping can be trained with reinforcement learning in sim and transferred to hardware — sim-to-real.
- Boston Dynamics' Alberto Rodriguez told IEEE Spectrum the team is now working out what must change "if we want to make 100,000 of these hands a year".
The factory and the new CEO
A week earlier the company opened its Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai's Georgia plant, where Atlas trains on parts sequencing. Hyundai targets parts sequencing from 2028 and component assembly from 2030, with 25,000 robots planned for Hyundai and Kia plants; RMAC moves to a ~10x larger site in 2027. On Oct 6 Boston Dynamics named Rohit Prasad CEO, effective Oct 7, to accelerate its physical AI strategy.
Why it matters
Dexterous hands are a top bottleneck for humanoids. Boston Dynamics is betting that a simpler, simulatable, repairable hand beats a perfect human copy on the factory floor.
