Schaeffler opens a Taicang plant where six humanoids build parts for other humanoids

Schaeffler opened a roughly 7,500-square-metre humanoid factory in Taicang where six robots work five stations making joint modules and linear and rotary actuators, mirrored by a digital twin. The company says global humanoid-robotics incoming orders are about €400 million.

Schaeffler opened a lighthouse factory for humanoid robotics in Taicang, China, on Oct 20. Six humanoids work across five stations on a joint-module assembly line in the roughly 7,500-square-metre site: they stage and sort parts, join them, then inspect, label and package. A digital twin mirrors the line while sensors record assembly accuracy, work-step duration, energy use and equipment condition, so process changes can be tested virtually before they reach the floor.

The "humanoids making humanoids" framing is narrower than it reads. The line produces joint modules and components — linear and rotary actuators — rather than finished robots, and Schaeffler calls the opening the start of mass production of those parts without attaching a unit capacity to it. That capacity is the number that would decide whether Taicang is a pilot line or a component business, and it is the figure the announcement withholds.

Orders and revenue are different figures

Schaeffler says two new Greater China customers in the third quarter took its global incoming humanoid-robotics orders to about €400 million. Incoming orders are not revenue, and none of that figure is tied specifically to the Taicang line. The distinction matters because actuator supply is the part of the humanoid stack where order books can look full while production is still small.

Training and production share a building

The site also houses a training and data-collection centre, with six categories of industrial scenarios including visual inspection, material picking and component assembly, aligned to conditions at Schaeffler's roughly 100 manufacturing plants. Newly learned skills can be checked on the adjacent line. That loop, rather than the six robots, is the asset: every production run produces the data that the next training round uses.

The robotics push has a longer arc. In January Schaeffler said it planned to deploy several hundred humanoids across its plants within five years, and in May it agreed with the robot maker Humanoid on a four-digit number of robots by 2032. Taicang is where those numbers get a production line underneath them.
