What is Level 4 autonomy (L4 self-driving)?
Level 4 is the SAE level where a vehicle drives itself with no human needed inside a defined operating area and conditions; robotaxis like Waymo operate at L4.

Definition
The SAE J3016 standard defines driving automation from Level 0 to 5. At Level 4 (high automation) the system performs the entire driving task and handles its own failures, with no human expected to intervene — but only inside its operational design domain (ODD).
In practice
Robotaxis are the main L4 product: geofenced driverless services that expand city by city and road type by road type — see Waymo's freeway expansion (story) and the Tesla vs Waymo race (story). Most L4 stacks combine cameras, radar and LiDAR.
Why it matters
"Level 4" separates true driverless operation from driver assistance. Expanding the ODD — highways, snow, new cities — is where the commercial race is fought.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Level 2, 3, 4 and 5?
L2: the system steers and brakes but the driver supervises at all times. L3: the car drives in limited conditions but a human must take over on request. L4: no human fallback needed within its operating domain. L5: drives anywhere a human could.
What is an operational design domain (ODD)?
The specific conditions where an L4 system is designed to work — e.g. certain cities, roads, speeds, weather and times of day.
Is Tesla FSD Level 4?
Tesla's consumer FSD (Supervised) requires an attentive driver, so it is Level 2. Driverless robotaxi service in a geofenced area would count as L4.
