Tesla starts Optimus production in Fremont, at least a year from its 20,000-a-week target
Tesla's Q3 2026 Update says the first production-quality Optimus robots are coming off a high-volume line in Fremont, with the deck's capacity table marking California "Early Ramp" and Texas "Construction". On the same day's earnings call, Musk said Tesla needs on the order of 10,000 or 20,000 bots doing self-play to collect training data, and put deliveries to companies outside Tesla around the end of 2027.
Tesla's Q3 2026 Update, published Oct 21, says Optimus production has begun in Fremont on its high-volume lines. The deck calls the output "the first production-quality bots that we have manufactured" and says Tesla has "proven that the current manufacturing process for Optimus is suitable for a commercial product."
The first customers are Tesla
For now the humanoid line serves Tesla itself. On the same-day earnings call, Musk said the company needs "on the order of 10 or 20,000 bots" doing self-play in what he called an "Optimus Academy" to collect the training data it lacks, put deliveries to companies outside Tesla at "around the end of next year," and said: "we're building robots that do not have perfected hands." Dangerous, repetitive industrial work is where he expects the first buyers. In its Q2 2026 deck in July, Tesla said the first robots would go to that internal academy rather than to factories or customers.
The date matches his Davos line on Jan 22: "By the end of next year, I think we'll be selling humanoid robots to the public." What is new is the list of conditions attached to it: Musk said he expects the AI, electromechanical design, reliability and usage life issues to be solved "around the end of next year," and a robot "can't wear out after a month."
Musk said Tesla has "the vast majority of a million-unit-per-line production line landed in Fremont right now," and that reaching an annualized 20,000 units a week, about 1.04 million a year, will take "probably at least a year, maybe a little longer," because "there are still parts of the design that are changing." The deck's capacity table lists the California line as "Early Ramp" and the Texas one as "Construction", both with capacity left blank. TechCrunch reported the Fremont space once built electric vehicles. CFO Vaibhav Taneja said Tesla has started constructing an Austin factory that "would be able to do a lot more robots" than Fremont.
The hand is still being redesigned
Constantinos, on Tesla's Optimus engineering team, called the hand "one of the most challenging hardware areas"; most of the electromechanical system "has converged," while some "bespoke gears" are still in development. Musk said the problem is "mostly the hand," especially the fingers. A dexterous hand that holds up in a factory sits on the critical path for those deliveries.
Tesla's own claims cut the other way on cost. It says it has proven the process is suitable for a commercial product, and Taneja said Optimus costs are "trending closer to where we would say our CyberCab costs would end up being." The quarter behind the deck was weaker: net income attributable to common stockholders was $787 million, down 43% from $1,373 million a year earlier, and capital expenditure rose 110% to $4,732 million. Tesla says it expects 400 MW of SI training compute by the end of the year, supporting vehicle and humanoid robot autonomy software.
The next checkable dates: the video Musk said may show Optimus doing tasks that are not pre-programmed "in a month or so," then "maybe it's a month or two"; the AI5 chip going into Optimus around April 2027; and deliveries to companies outside Tesla around the end of 2027.
